“CMG: Totally. Whew. My closing question now seems so large and yet so feeble: What do you think is the solution to all of this?
MA: I think it might be like working on getting these female gendered spaces to get more credibility. That would be ideal. But there is an in-between space. And it doesn’t necessarily exist yet. It needs to be written. I don’t know that either space is going to make sense on its own. But I just want to emphasize that the more we talk about it, the better off we are. The dialogue is really important, and one of the main points of the magazine is to keep that dialogue going.”

Mindy Abovitz, editor of Tom Tom Magazine, discussing the future of women in music, sexism, feminism — all of it — in an amazing interview over at Coke Machine Glow. What stands out to me about her response here is her emphasis on the importance of dialogue. There will never be a singular “solution” I suspect, but I think it’s essential to maintain an ongoing and productive conversation. Awareness, skepticism, hope —> these are the important things!
Mindy was also at Lady Parts.001. In fact, she was the first lady to show up!

Amy Andronicus: Last Night, After the Show...
Sweat-soaked and exhausted, and huddled in a little ball rubbing my aching legs, I noticed a woman walking towards me. She seemed to be about my age, or maybe a little older. She had a great cloud of tangled curls and her large eyes gave way to tiny smile wrinkles at the edges. I wasn’t sure what…

Lauren Cucinotta, founder and organizer of Brooklyn’s Pie in the Park, brought her own, totally award-worthy pie to Lady Parts. Just some sweet, sweet edible bribery to make sure you come to the next one!
Check the drool-worthy gallery of photos from this years event here.

Blueberry lavender pie from this years celebration/contest: Pie in the Park. Organizer Lauren Cucinotta was at Lady Parts, and she definitely brought some pie with her. Drooling….
“This year’s champs were notable for their uniqueness. Best Presentation went to a “Worm in Dirt” creation made with a wafer crust, cookie topping and hidden treasures like a gummi rat and gummi worms. Best Crust went to a pie with Bing cherry Bacon Marmalade hugged by a duck-fat-and-thyme crust. Second place went to a tomato-cheddar pie, and a close third was a blueberry-almond pie. But the winner for best overall and best filling went to a Cuban-inspired creation with a piccadillo meat topping and a sweet plantain bottom, made by Carol Roman.”

“I read, I think, I write, but mostly I act. And I try to act with people around me. I still believe that ideas can change the world. I know it can sound like a very romantic vision — but it’s not so romantic because things are changing … While you are changing things, you meet fantastic people. We have more interesting lives if we are on the side of action and change, than if we just protect what already exists and apply rules.”

Simon Brault, in an interview from The Walrus Blog. Inspirational! This is a powerful little piece: thoughtful, critical, and (most importantly!) optimistic as hell. A quick read, very worth it. Would love to hear any feedback/thoughts.
Another important thought:
…”that is antithetical to what you’re calling for, which is collective spaces for people to engage with the arts together.”

“The [more Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich and Democratic] you are, the more you perceive a world full of separate objects, rather than relationships, and the more you use an analytical thinking style, focusing on categories and laws, rather than a holistic style, focusing on patterns and contexts.”
— from a summary of findings on how humans reason morally. separate, independently functioning objects with completely individual histories (at home alone on a computer?) vs a more collective sense of conscious and an awareness that we function as beings in constant relationship to one another (the next lady parts!!!!!). morning food for thought.
